The Facts

The Ochs’n Willi is a not so small restaurant not far from the Schlossplatz. From the outside it looks smaller than it is: The restaurant has over 180 seats.
Although the restaurant is always well attended you can take a seat after a short waiting time in most cases. So reservation is not essential but wouldn’t be amiss.
The large salad bar never runs dry and is always refilled with fresh supplies. The unquestionable highlight of the menu is the 500g grilled T-bone steak that is served with herb butter and baked potatoes.

For a nice evening in Stuttgart this steak house is the first choice for lively discussion rounds after having watched a movie in one of the inner city cinemas.

The Ochs’n Willi is located directly in Stuttgart city centre. You can get there by S-Bahn. Leave the public transport at main station or station Stadtmitte. The restaurant can be found here:

The Facts

The Schlesinger is known for its relaxed atmosphere. The offering of German beer is quite remarkable. A fridge that is always well-stocked with speciality beers should always be taken into account before an order is placed. Special events like the “day of German beer” (23rd of April) are strongly recommended. Over 100 different types of German beer are available at that day. Regularly there are also other special events like the “Weltschlesingertag” and many more. Groups can be brought together at a very large desk which almost extends over the whole pub. On Fridays or Saturdays reservation is needed for groups consisting of 10 people or more if you want to take a seat there. For live football the Schlesinger is the pub of choice particularly at WM or EM times. The games can be watched on a big screen and the pub is extremely well populated.

Where and When

The S-Bahn can be used to reach the Schlesinger. Next to station Stadtmitte the pub is within walking distance. The exact address is Schlossstraße 28. The opening times are from 5 pm to 1 am on weekdays and from 6 pm to 2 am on Saturdays. Unfortunately the pub is closed on Sundays.

The Facts

The O’Reilly’s is managed by an original Irish publican – just this fact raises high expectations to the potential new guests. And these expectations will definitely not be disappointed! The list of beverages is enormous. Of cause there is a wide range of draught beer available like Guinness, Kilkenny and many more. Even Newcastle Brown Ale, Strongbow Cider and various mixed drinks are available. The list of Irish whiskeys and Scotch malt whiskies is quite impressive. Over 30 different types are on stock.
Live sport on television is shown regularly. The main focus is on football matches with Irish or British participation including Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. Rugby matches are also possible. Live music is played every Monday from about 9:30 pm. It’s an open session and all are welcome to play along. Pub quizzes are also held here.

Where and When

Located in the inner city of Stuttgart the O’Reilly’s can be reached by S-Bahn quite easily. Just next to station Schwabstrasse the pub can be found in the Reuchlinstrasse 27.
The opening times are from 5 pm to 1 am on weekdays and from 12 noon to 1 am on weekends.

Three misunderstandings about Figurentheater

Misunderstanding #1: Figurentheater is only for kids

Figurentheater is for kids AND adults. The program of the Fitz theatre is divided into to parts: “Fitz for kids” and “Fitz in the evening”. While the shows for the small audience are in the morning  and afternoon, the grown up generation will visit the shows in the evenings. Like in “normal” theaters of course you can have a small snack or maybe enjoy a glass of wine in the nice lobby before the performance begins.

Misunderstanding #2: Figurentheater is like Kasperle Theater

As already mentioned, puppets are a main part of the Figurentheater, but its more than that: besides marionettes and puppets in the Fitz you will experience masks, actors, everyday objects, light and shadow. It is an very multidisciplinary art, with relations to dance, play, music and pantomime; sometimes funny, sometimes sad or romantic.

Misunderstanding #3: Figurentheater is antiquated

The Figurentheater was for centuries a meaningful part of the asian culture and came to europe at the beginning of the 20th century. Meanwhile it is established in the local cultural scene. In particular Stuttgart became a main european centre of this art. Today there is actually a course of studies “Figurentheater” at the university for music and performing arts in Stuttgart where students can complete their degree.

So, if you are getting curious, you may want to visit one of the more than 40 productions that are yearly shown.

Are you a fan of the Asian cuisine and tired of all that Chinese fast-food restaurants that are located on almost every corner of the city? Then you should definitely visit the Shaba restaurant in the east of Stuttgart. The food tastes delicious, the service is polite and the restaurant offers a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere.

But be careful: if a dish in the menu is described as “very hot”, you can be sure that it is a very, very hot challenge for your tongue, gap and stomach! So if you are too sensitive, order one of the as well very good sweet and sour dishes.

Another advantage of the Shaba is the garden, where you can sit and eat outside in summer. On weekends a reservation is advisable, in order that you have not to wait too long for a free table. By now the Shaba has become a very well known “insider tip”.

Conclusion

The Shaba is a great Thai restaurant ideal for all people who love hot Asian dishes and exotic cocktails. Regrettably it is not a cheap restaurant, but the cost/performance ratio is absolutely fair.

Prinz City Magazine – Restaurant Finder

The  ‘Leudelsbachtal’ is named after the small brook Leudelsbach. It has it’s source to the west of Ludwigsburg and ends after some kilometers in the river Enz. The distance from Vector company building is about 15 km. The start and the end of the hiking trail is the parking lot ‘Tammer See’ at the street between Markgröningen and Tamm. There is an information board available with shows the hiking routes in detail.

The trail goes downstream to the mouth of the Leudelsbach into the Enz river. Then along the Enz until a path on the right hand side goes uphill (sign ‘to Schellenhof’) and on top of the hill the way comes full circle. There are different possibilities to return, it depends how long you want to hike. The trails are marked with signs so there is no danger to get lost. Without any  stay the trip took approximately 2 hours.

The landscape is not spectacular but diversified and idyllic. There are very steep vineyards, grassland, woods and range land for a flock of sheep which belongs to the city of Markgröningen. A walk in the Leudelsbachtal is always exciting – regardless from the season.

The Leudelsbachtal is a nature protection area and a bird sanctuary. A various number of  animals live there which can be seen very seldom,  e.g. Kingfisher, Cormorant, Red Kite and the Fire Salamander. Also a lot of beautiful plants and flowers are native to that place e.g. several Orchids (e.g. Helmknabenkraut), Carline Thistle and Rue.

The Leudelsbachtal is also a local recreation area with opportunities for several sport activities e.g. Jogging, Nordic Walking or Mountain Biking and Canoeing on the river Enz.

Additional guided tours take place at regular intervals to make the visitors familiar with flowers and animals and to show how this very special environment has to be protected.

If you feel hungry or thirsty on the hiking tour you can visit the  Schellenhof Restaurant or the Flohberghaus Restaurant – with a beautiful beer garden at summer time. In addition there is a small shelter on the bank of river Enz which is sometimes opened. Here you can enjoy drinks and simple dishes on a wonderful terrace.

Dinner at Restaurant ‘Herrenküferei’ in Markgröningen

Markgröningen is located next to ‘Leudelsbachtal’ (approx. 1,5 km). It is an old town, first mentioned in 779 B.C. In the middle age Markgröningen was a very rich community which is documented in the well preserved historical old town. Markgröningen has one of the oldest traditional festivals in Baden-Württemberg – the famous ‘Schäferlauf’ which takes place always at the last weekend in August.

The Restaurant ‘Herrenküferei’ is located next to the town hall on the market place in one of the oldest buildings (built in 1414 B.C.) of Markgröningen. It has an excellent cuisine which has got several awards (e.g. from Gault Milaut). The guests enjoy their meals and drinks in a delightful ambience with a very good service.

Individual Recommendations and Helpful Links

What makes the Leudelsbachtal so special to me is,  first that it’s so close to the place where I live, second that I can experience the changing of the beautiful nature during all seasons and third, that I meet my friends there for common jogging or nordic walking tours.

My recommendations are:

• Join a guided tour in the Leudelsbachtal with NABU in May.
• Visit the ‘Schäferlauf’ in Markgröningen, especially on Friday or Monday it’s a familiar atmosphere.

Renate Moser-Joos

It combines the Schloßgarten facility as well as Rosenstein Park and the Höhenpark Killesberg to create an eight kilometer long relaxation landscape. It offers a great opportunity for those who need to get away from it all for a while or those who looking for a good place for inlines skating or jogging.

The Green U starts with the old Schlossgarten, castle gardens. The park stretches down to the river Neckar and is divided into the upper garden (bordering the New and the Old Castles, the Main Station and the State Theater), and the middle and lower gardens. Amid the beautiful alleys and sculptures that decorate the park stands also Carl Zeiss-planetarium.

At the far end of Schlossgarten lies the second Green U park, the larger Rosensteinpark which borders Stuttgart’s Wilhelma zoo and botanical gardens. This park was planted by King William I of Württemberg, contains many grand old trees and counts as the largest English-style garden in southern Germany. Rosenstein museum (former Rosenstein castle) stands in the grounds of the Rosenstein Garden and houses today exhibits of the State Museum of Natural History.

Beyond bridges over the railway track lies the final Green U park, Killesbergpark or ‘Höhenpark’. Many gardening shows take place in this garden. In the middle of the Killesberg Höhenpark you cann walk up the 43-metre viewing tower (Killesbergturm) which offers unique views across to the north east of Stuttgart. This outlook tower is constructed with tensile steel cables and expanded metal platforms (designed by Jörg Schlaich), and is very light – and rocks back and forth in the wind.
